Are nightshade vegetables really bad for you?
If nightshades are bad for you, then your non-nightshade organic produce may be worse!
Many people misleadingly believe that nightshade vegetables (tomatoes, eggplants, potatoes, peppers, etc.) are “bad” for inflammation. Don’t even get me started on those self-proclaimed “experts” whose marketing tactics are to spread sensational-sounding, almost-believable, yet misleading pseudo-science.
NIGHTSHADES ARE NUTRITIOUS, HEALTHFUL FOODS AND THERE IS NO EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE CLAIMS THAT THEY CAUSE OR WORSEN INFLAMMATION.
For the most part, people think that nightshade veggies contain a toxic alkaloid compound called solanine. Solanine is produced by these plants in order to protect themselves from insects that would eat them. In high concentration, solanine is toxic. The leaves and stems of these plants contain high concentration of solanine. That’s why we don’t eat the leaves and stems of these veggies including the potatoes that have sprouted. It’s going to take a large amount of solanine to cause problems in most of the population, except those with sensitivity toward these vegetables.
The fruits and tubers that we actually eat don’t contain enough solanine to cause problems. In fact, dark coloured nightshades are actually anti-inflammatory due to the high antioxidants content.
It’s therefore misleading to call nightshades an inflammatory food or “bad for everyone” food.
BUT HERE’S THE KICKER!
Solanine, that toxic compound that is supposedly so bad in nightshades, IS AN APPROVED PESTICIDE IN ORGANIC FARMING! YES 😂
Because it exists “naturally” in plants, organic farming practices APPROVE the use of solanine to repel insects. So now, you’re consuming solanine not from nightshades but from most of your non-nightshade organic produce. Not to mention you’re out a few extra pennies buying organic.
