18 best essential oils for hair growth and Alopecia treatment
Essential oils are widely used for their therapeutic properties on physical and emotional wellbeing. In this post, I’m going to share my findings on 18 best essential oils for hair growth and how to use them as part of your Alopecia topical treatment. I also explore scientific studies that support the treatment potential of essential oils for Alopecia.
Safety first: Are essential oils right for you?
In recent years, essential oils have become a go-to for many people trying to move away from chemical-laden household and personal-care products.
It’s easy to see how good quality essential oils — those that are made of nothing but their plant sources — can be a safer alternative to many commercially made and sold products filled with chemicals.
On the flip side, it takes a lot of plant ingredients to produce a small bottle of essential oil, which means that every drop is very concentrated and can be quite potent. Not all essential oils on the market are the same though. Most essential oils sold in drug stores or health food stores have been mixed and diluted with other ingredients.
Essential oils may interfere with some pre-existing medical and health conditions, as well as any medication that you may be taking. In this circumstance, use the oils with care and consult your healthcare practitioner for their professional advice before deciding if essential oils are right for you.
Although they are very concentrated, I honestly don’t think that essential oils are ‘dangerous’ if used sensibly.
While I believe it is good practice to be mindful and cautious of anything you plan on using, I do think essential oils are still a lot safer than most commercially sold personal and household products.
Using essential oils for hair growth and to support your Alopecia treatment is also a safer and better option than using most commercially sold hair care products which tend to be highly chemically processed. However, when using essential oils for hair growth, it’s important to ensure that you get really good quality, pure essential oils.
7 tips on how to safely use essential oils on children
As with anything else, we want to be extra careful when it comes to kids. Here are my safety pointers on safely using essential oils for hair growth in children with Alopecia:
- Don’t use essential oils topically on babies, as their skin is still very thin and sensitive.
- Choose essential oils that are safe for children. Usually, this means essential oils that don’t contain oxygenated compounds such as phenols and alcohols. Examples of essential oils that contain phenols and alcohols are peppermint, rosemary, and wintergreen, among others.
- Never use essential oils internally on children. In other words, do not let kids ingest essential oils.
- When using essential oils topically on children, make sure their eyes, nose and mouth won’t come into direct contact with where the essential oils are applied.
- Introduce essential oils one at a time, testing a small amount on a small area of the skin if using topically. This allows you to identify if your child is sensitive to any particular oil. If they don’t have negative reaction, you can gradually increase the amount up to a safe dilution ratio.
- Always dilute essential oils when applying topically, started with less concentrated working your way up to a safe and appropriate dilution ratio depending on your child’s age. Personally, I am not scientific when it comes to dilution, as I’ve used essential oils long enough on my daughter to have a good grip on what works and what’s safe for her.
- Diffusing is a generally safer way for children to use essential oils. If your child has asthma or other respiratory illnesses, consult your healthcare professional on what’s safe in this case.

Scientific studies that support essential oils for Alopecia treatment
There have been a number of studies that examined the efficacy of using essential oils for the treatment of Alopecia Areata.
One study divided 86 patients with Aopecia Areata into 2 groups, where the active group (Group A) massaged a mix of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedarwood essential oils in jojoba and grapeseed carrier oils daily, while the control group (Group B) used only carrier oils, also daily.
2 dermatologies took sequential photographs and measured degree of improvement using a 6-point scale and computerized analysis of traced areas of alopecia.
At the end of the 7-month study, results concluded that 44% of the patients in Group A (the ones who used essential oils + carrier oils) showed significant improvement (P = .05) vs. 15% of the patients in Group B (the ones who only used carrier oils) where P = 0.008.
Any form of Alopecia treatment only addresses the symptoms
It’s important to note, however, that any form of topical treatment for Alopecia Areata only addresses the symptoms. This includes medicated topical treatment as well as Alopecia treatment using natural and essential oils.
Although essential oils are a good and safe option to use as part of topical Alopecia treatment, they are not able to cure the root cause of autoimmune disease that causes the hair loss in the first place. At best, they only manage what’s going on at the scalp and hair levels.
Restoring your immune system is a much more complex process that involves very comprehensive nutrition for all your vital body systems, in addition to sleep, exercise, and managed stress levels. In order to stop the immune system from attacking itself, various immune functions, immune response and chemical signals in your body need to communicate properly. You can influence the proper functioning of this complex network by giving your body the right nutrition it needs as fuel.
You’ll get the best results if you use essential oils topical treatment alongside with properly nourishing your body from the inside, with wholesome plant foods rich in phytochemicals, antioxidants, and polysaccharides.

As there are no reliable, safe, or effective medical treatment options for Alopecia Areata, good quality essential oils when used appropriately may be a safe alternative to manage the symptoms of Alopecia Areata. This is especially so for children for which medical Alopecia treatment options would introduce side effects that are far more harmful and damaging to their health in the long run.
However, it is important to note that any form of Alopecia treatment, whether it be medical or more natural (such as using essential oils), only addresses the symptoms of the underlying root cause. Although it is generally safer than most commercially sold, chemical-laden hair care products, essential oils alone will not be sufficient to help improve your hair loss or hair growth when the root cause comes from a malfunctioning, self-attacking immune system.
Essential oils may be beneficial if they take the place of otherwise chemical-laden hair care products. They may also deliver the benefits of the plant ingredients used to produce these oils, if used carefully.
A more important thing to focus on for long term recovery from autoimmune diseases is the nourishment of your immune system and providing your body with the phytochemicals, antioxidants and polysaccharides it needs in order to function properly. An immune system that functions properly does not create an environment for diseases and autoimmune disorders, and that’s the best way to achieve long term health and resolve Alopecia Areata.
