Why Fish Oil Is Not a Good Idea
Fish oil is one of the top selling supplements, if not the top one. The reason why people consume fish oil is to increase their intake of omega 3 fatty acids.
Fish oil is not the best way and definitely not the only way to get your omega 3.
Omega 3 fatty acids are crucial for their anti-inflammatory properties and are very important in your autoimmune recovery. But fish oil is not the best way to obtain your omega 3 fatty acids intake.
Omega 3 fatty acids consist of ALA, EPA, and DHA. The omega 3 in fish is only EPA and DHA, as ALA (alpha linoleic acid) is only found in plant sources of omega 3.
Plants do not contains EPA and DHA. When fish consumes ALA through the plants they eat, such as algae, the fish converts the ALA into EPA and DHA.
EPA and DHA are converted by animal bodies, including human bodies, from ALA found in plants. So if humans consume ALA from algae and plants, our body can convert this ALA into EPA and DHA. We DO NOT need to acquire EPA and DHA from fish.
Fish oil is usually made of fish body parts with the highest fat content, fish skin and liver. Yet, skin and liver are detoxifying organs with high concentration of toxins.
The skin of fish skin is highly contaminated due to the pollution of our waters including industrial waste and chemicals, and oil spills. And liver in any animal is an organ that collects and processes toxins, so animal livers naturally contain high amounts of toxins.
After they are extracted from animals, these fats often go through a lot of processing before they can be turned into a supplements form.
If your fish oil is made from farmed fish, you don’t know the conditions in which the fish is grown, the quality of feeds, cleanliness of the water, the level of contamination, and the use of antibiotics.
Plant foods like kiwi seeds, chia seeds, and the seeds of dragon fruits contain ALA which our body can convert into EPA and DHA as long as you don’t consume excess amount of omega 6 which can disrupt the conversion of ALA into EPA and DHA.
You can consume chia seeds, preferably ground right before you consume them. Because of their fat content, albeit healthy fat, ground chia seeds can go rancid quickly.
